Faith Community Christian Church was originally founded as Nicoma Park Christian church by a small group of people led by Rev. J.L. Schuler, who was at that time pastor of Central Christian Church in Oklahoma City. The first service was held December 17, 1933 at 2:30 P.M. Afternoon services were held by Reb. Schuler until March 18, 1934 when regular morning and evening services began.
On February 23, 1934, Rev. Schuler began a Revival meeting and the first night 14 people placed their membership in the church. Howard Wilson was on of those 14. We are indebted to Howard for preserving the record of the church founding. The Revival concluded on March 9, 1934 with a total of 28 members. Lora Short was the first baptism in this church. Meetings were held in the old Community Hall constructed by G.A. Nichols, the developer of Nicoma Park.
Reading thru the record book you get a graphic impression of the struggle these people had in founding and maintaining this church. The entire offering for the two week Revival was $17.51. Of this amount $5.00 was paid for the use of the building. Rev. Schuler received $4.51 for gasoline and sixty cents was spent for light bulbs. The average offering for both morning and evening services for some time after that was $6.00 to $8.00 a week. The spirit and faith of these people prevailed, however, and gradually the membership grew.
In 1942 a loan of $1,500.00 was obtained from the Church Board of Extension and the Community Building was purchased. Several present members have vivid memories of that old building. In spite of numerous coats of tar and paper the roof leaked incessantly. We had a vast collection of pots and pans which were placed in strategic locations to catch the drips. It was cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and wet most of the time. There was a belfry which housed the big bell which called us to worship on Sunday mornings.
We had an old foot treadle pipe organ which was converted to operate mechanically by sheer ingenuity and an old washing machine motor. Mrs. Musser, who served as organist for many years, loved that old instrument and somehow coaxed it to perform beautifully. In 1947 a surplus Army barracks was purchased and moved in to serve as out first Fellowship Hall, and was also used for Sunday School classes. It was not beautiful to look at, but all enjoyed the nice kitchen which was furnished by the women's organization; and there were no leaks! All remodeling and repairing was done by volunteer labor from the congregation. From its inception until 1950 this congregation did not have an on-site full time minister, but was served by student ministers on weekends from Phillips University.
In 1950 our first parsonage was acquired and a full time minister was employed. This parsonage was located on the corner of Jeffords and Overholster.
In 1955 the old Army barracks was removed and the a structure south of the sanctuary was constructed to serve as Fellowship Hall and Sunday School rooms. Again the construction was primarily done by volunteer labor of our members. This structure was built on solid rock, as several men of the congregation can attest to, for they remember taking turns with pick and shovel.
In 1961 the old Community building was torn down and a new Sanctuary was erected by contract labor. Our original parsonage was sold and the proceeds applied to the cost of out new Sanctuary. This Sanctuary was dedicated December 3, 1961.
In April of 1966 the church was incorporated and the name became Nicoma Park Christian Church. Since 1968 We have employed full time ministers and at that time purchased a parsonage which was located at 11210 Jeffords.
In 1973 a new Fellowship Hall was constructed, and the church office, pastor's study, and Sunday School classrooms were completely remodeled.
In 1978 the old parsonage was sold and a new on acquired at 907 Oak Park Drive in Choctaw.
In 2000 the name was changed to Faith Community Christian Church and plans were started to build a new church at Reno and Choctaw road. We moved into the new building in September of 2002
